| Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Cathie Craigie has hit out against the SNP Government's licensing plans laid out in their Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Bill.
The licensing proposals could have detrimental consequences on community organisations and charities. Under the proposals, these organisations, including groups in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area, would have to procure a license if they wanted to run small fairs, coffee mornings or other events.
As local authorities would be responsible for setting the charge, there is a great likelihood that fees would differ from council to council.
Cathie said:
"This legislation is unfair and threatens community groups and charities in our area.
"The license could force these hard-working, charitable organisations to scrap vital fundraising events such as gala days, fairs and coffee mornings.
"With local authorities having discretion over charging, there is a real chance that one branch of a charity could face a much higher fee than another branch of the same charity in a neighbouring council. There can be no denying that this is unfair.
"The SNP's proposals are ludicrous, underdeveloped and a serious threat to our charitable sector.
"I care about our charities and community groups, even if the Justice Secretary does not, and intend on adding crucial amendments to the Bill in order to protect them."
