The new town of Cumbernauld is situated to the north-east of Glasgow and is combined with the older mining town of Kilsyth, north of the river Kelvin to form the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth constituency. The constituency also includes the villages of Banton, Croy and Queenzieburn
The Campsie Hills lie to the north of the constituency, which also lies in the course of the Roman Antonine wall and the Forth and Clyde Canal. Hi-tech industries and Her Majest's Revenue and Customs are the major employers in the area. Over 70% of the residents in the area are home owners. The opening of the Antonine Shopping Centre with 600 jobs in 2007 has helped Cumbernauld Town Centre shed its negative image, while a successful regeneration of the mooring basin at Auchinstarry on the Forth and Clyde Canal was completed in early 2008.
Since 1999, a new joint campus school - Cumbernauld and St Andrew's Primary - has been built north of the A80 and two replacement schools - St Patrick's Primary in Kilsyth and Baird Memorial Primary in Condorrat have also been constructed. Cumbernauld College benefited from a 10 million pounds extension completed in 2007.
Cumbernauld and Kilsyth have a population approaching 70,000 and an electorate of almost 50,000. It has been held by Cathie Craigie since 1999 and was one of the few seats in Scotland where Labour increased their share of the vote and majority in the 2007 Scottish Parliament elections.
If you live in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth and you have an issue you wish to raise with Cathie, please go to the Constituents' Area.
