| Local Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Cathie Craigie spoke this week in the Scottish Parliament to mark the 60th Diamond Anniversary of the founding of the National Health Service.
Cathie Craigie MSP not only discussed the history of the NHS and how it has saved countless lives over the last sixty years, but also looked to the future to discuss how the NHS can remain a health service that is fit for all and free at the point of need.
Nominations also remain open for people living in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth to put forward their NHS Heroes. To mark the diamond anniversary of the NHS, Cathie Craigie MSP has asked local groups and constituents to nominate someone who represents the best of the NHS. All you have to do is email details to cathie.craigie.msp@scottish.parliament.uk, or telephone 01236 825 372.
Once nominations close on the 16 June 2008, all the nominated local NHS Heroes, as well as everyone who has responded, will be invited to a special event in Cumbernauld to mark the NHS's 60th birthday.
Cathie Craigie MSP said:
"All of us in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth should take some time this summer to celebrate our health service. I know that I have said thank you many times for the NHS and for the work that its staff have done. That work has often been life saving for members of my family."
"We have to move with the times and we have to admit that our modern health care is good but that it can always get better. We also have to protect the idea that everyone should have access to the National Health Service."
"I hope that, over the next 60 years, we are able to maintain the service and ensure that it remains true to Nye Bevan's vision of 60 years ago. It should remain a health service that is fit for all and free at the point of need."
