| Cathie Craigie MSP secured an urgent review into security at Castle Huntly open prison with her intervention in First Ministers Question Time.
Pressure was piled on the SNP Government to act after it emerged Robert Foye, an inmate at Castle Huntly open prison, savagely raped a 16-year old girl while on the run from the prison after being allowed to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting unescorted.
Local Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Cathie Craigie called on First Minister Alex Salmond to act, demanding answers to why Foye was in an open prison in the first place and why he was able to commit this horrific crime during his SECOND attempt to flee from prison.
Speaking in the Parliament, Cathie Craigie MSP said:
"My constituents want to know why this monster was allowed out of jail and why he was in an open prison in the first place when he had attempted to murder a police officer. Will the First Minister initiate an urgent review to tighten up who is allowed into open prisons and who is allowed out on day release? This monster might not have been out on early release, but he was allowed out on day release and he was allowed to violate one of my young constituents."
Although First Minister Alex Salmond firstly responded that the ongoing McLeish commission would address the situation, later on that day Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced an urgent internal review to be carried out by the Scottish Prison Service into the case of Robert Foye.
Speaking to the Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle, Cathie Craigie MSP said:
"It is right that the Scottish Government has now realised the severity of this disturbing case and have agreed to an urgent review."
"I have written to the Justice Secretary to demand answers firstly as to why this monster was allowed out of jail unescorted and secondly why it took until now, when this matter was raised in Parliament, for Ministers to act."
"There are clearly problems with the open prison system and they must be solved before any more victims are created."
"The bravery of the young victim in ensuring Foye was brought to justice must be applauded and I wish her well in trying to recover from this appalling experience. This should never be allowed to happen again."
