Local MSP Appointed Ambassador to Deaf Parents

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Cathie Craigie has joined the cast of Coronation Street among others with her appointment as an Ambassador to Deaf Parenting UK.

Deaf Parenting UK is the first ever charity to be run by Deaf Parents for Deaf Parents. It supports represents the needs of Deaf parents in the UK, who have hearing children, deaf children or children with a disability.

Cathie Craigie MSP, who convenes the Scottish Parliament's Cross Party Group on Deafness, also met this week with Abbie Mathieson, a deaf pupil at Donaldson's College. Abbie, who was carrying out work experience with the Scottish Children's Commissioner, discussed the work of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament, as well as the need for British Sign Language to be better understood and taught in all Scottish schools.

Cathie Craigie MSP said:

"I am honoured to be invited to be an Ambassador for Deaf Parenting UK."

"Too many of the needs of Deaf parents are still to be addressed at every level in Scottish and British society, and I commend DPUK's fantastic efforts to both raise awareness and to provide information and advice to Deaf mothers and fathers. I completely support Deaf Parenting UK in their efforts to enable and empower Deaf parents."

"It was also a pleasure to meet Abbie Mathieson from Donaldson's College and to see her enthusiasm for more efforts to be made to ensure British Sign Language is understood by more people."

"I know that many schools in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth have worked to introduce pupils to British Sign Language, but Abbie and I agreed a lot more needs to be done."
