| Local Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Cathie Craigie today accused the SNP government of failing hundreds of "forgotten pensioners" in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth who will be without central heating over the coldest months of the year and called on Ministers to put pressure on Scottish Gas to speed up its installation programme.
The local Labour MSP has been deluged with constituents contacting her regarding the Scottish Gas Free Central Heating scheme for pensioners.
While SNP Minister Stewart Maxwell claims the average waiting time for pensioners to be supplied with a free central heating system is five to six months, longer than under the previous Labour administration, it is clear that there are instances across Cumbernauld and Kilsyth where older people are being told they will have to wait much longer, up to a year, for new central heating.
Cathie Craigie MSP said:
"Over the last few months I have noticed a considerable increase in the number of pensioners calling my office who are facing the cold winter months without an adequate heating system in place."
"Nothing should be more important than ensuring our most senior citizens are not left out in the cold this winter."
"At the very least Ministers should be calling in Scottish Gas executives to demand that the backlog of central heating installations for our older people is tackled."
"No doubt Ministers will claim that they have allocated more funds but that money has been specifically allocated to help pensioners without heating and hot water. There are many older people whose heating system has been condemned but will have to wait until the Spring or Summer for a replacement."
"Too many older people living in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, through no fault of their own, will face a cold start to 2008. The SNP should be putting their well-being first as we enter this cold snap."
